The haul is getting longer and harder, the models getting more involved, and now I find myself not caring anymore. I've moved back to Sonnet, and I'm actively looking at self-hosting Qwen3.8:27b as a vector to breaking dependence while regaining control of my workflow.
The harness has run away with the work, and its absolutely right that the slop has reach Oceanic levels.
I just spent a hard two months crunching to get a Voice agent out into the world, and guess what... nobody really cares. We're in the final gasps of the perceived bubble, before the reality of commodity compute taking control of non-hosted models and the dumb bots are here to stay in every corner. Even if every frontier lab and data center vanished right now, we have models and local training pipes that will forever fundamentally alter how we build going forward.
So what is the point of this rant? The end is nigh? The substance is real? Phaw. The reality is that its business as usual and this is just another piece of fancy tech that we're finally getting a handle on.
For example, the deepseek harness. Its a crescendo of a long journey of work by quiet communities--in this case the PI community, which dates back to the earliest models.
Modular harnesses I guess is the point. Bringing the model's reins and saddle into the hands of the individual. It reads like a DIY kit of pure modularity. Start with the basics, patch in any model with a (model) card, build or hoist from community your own components.
There's already prebuilts, the core items that we know from daily coding agents, clawbots, and more cowork like functionality. The default runner is a webportal.
But its efficient. Inspectable. Tailorable. I've been exploring the awesome plugin community, much like the Obsidian plugins of the past decade opened up personal note taking/data analysis. Control of your harness is key to a thriving future.
